HOW: An agent of Skyhold got a bead on Larius' last known location through interactions with the Carta, which should give Alistair and his team enough of a starting point for tracking the smugglers down. The smugglers, while reasonably wary, go through rank-and-file types quickly enough that they're usually looking for competent help, temporary or otherwise; getting work with them should be reasonably simple as long as no one blurts out pro-Inquisition sentiments or anything.
Amenable members of the smuggler organization who have been around for several years will be able to tell the group that Larius presented himself as a Grey Warden mage; some of them can confirm witnessed him doing magic firsthand. (Alistair, at least, may know that this is pretty weird, since Warden records indicate he was not at all a mage.) The team can also gather from those they talk to that Larius was aloof, standoffish, and cold. (One particularly voluble guy might go so far as "creepy.") More than general anti-Warden sentiment, there's a sense among those you talk to that while he gave them useful information, Larius was definitely unsettling. Newer recruits will say they've never met him. The question of "where is he now" gets nowhere.
OOC NOTES: Since the smugglers are getting red lyrium from the source to those who want it, you have some leeway in deciding where, geographically, you want to catch up to them (within reason). Since it's just Alistair assigned, he can grab up to 3 other people to help if he likes.
