Plot Reports

PLOT REPORTS

Because Fade Rift's plot developments take place largely via small plots and missions and it would be very difficult for anyone—including us—to keep up with what everyone else is doing, we rely on plot reports to keep everyone on the same page.

OFFICIAL REPORTS

Most reports should go on [community profile] therookery using the form at the top of the comm. These include:

  • Reports for any war table assignment.
  • Reports for player plots that are set up as official missions. Example: you propose a player plot that occurs because Riftwatch sends your character and their friends to explore a ruin and search for a particular artifact.
  • Reports for things that don’t begin as official missions but turn into something that the organization would need to be officially informed of. Example: your character goes home for their mother’s birthday but is attacked by Tevinter assassins on the way, or your character causes a huge fire in Lowtown during their free time that Kirkwall might hold Riftwatch accountable for so your character needs to tell their boss what happened.
These reports don't need to be long or overly detailed, unless that's fun for you to write. The goal is just to give everyone else a way to keep up with what's going on, read back on past plot developments, etc. Reports are periodically transferred to the wiki and tagged with relevant countries and topics so people who want to come up with their own plots addressing a particular subject can easily reference them.

Reports should usually be public—meaning everyone in Riftwatch can go read them in the appropriate offices as needed, not that the general public can read them. If something contains particularly sensitive information, you do have the option of specifying that only particular people will have access to it. This should be done sparingly; we don’t want anyone to have to navigate a lot of secrecy and cite specific sources to be involved in things. IC leaders can also choose to restrict access to reports if there’s a reason to do so, or they can unrestrict access if they don’t think keeping something away from the rest of the organization is warranted.

When reports for war table assignments or mission-based player plots aren't submitted within a few months, the mod team will generally assume that those plots were dropped—or at least didn't succeed/have an impact/obtain any information—and forge ahead as if they never occurred. That means we might put your war table assignment back on the table for someone else to try, or we might do future plots/assignments that conflict with your player plot. So if you do a plot and want to make sure it "counts," submit a report!

UNOFFICIAL/SECRET REPORTS

If your character does something that they wouldn't officially report to Riftwatch, for whatever reason, but that you think we as mods might still need to know about and incorporate into our decisions about the larger world, you can file an unofficial/secret report by replying to this page with the form below.

Some examples of things that might warrant unofficial reports:

  • Your character is a spy for an entity other than Riftwatch and is secretly sending it information about Riftwatch's activities. You can use this mechanism to let us know what they've sent, so if that entity comes up in the mod plot we can take into account what it might already know about Riftwatch's activities or plans.
  • Your character goes rogue and does something that they intentionally wouldn't tell Riftwatch about—assassinating unapproved targets, doing something to advance a private political agenda, etc.—but that will potentially have an effect on the mod plot or overall state of the world.
  • NPCs you control (characters' family members, other members of organizations you invented for them, etc.) do something you think we should be aware of or take into consideration for the world state.
The purpose of these is mostly to help the mod team keep up with all of the game's moving pieces when we plan mod plots, write news, and approve player plots. For example, if your character has been sending reports to Empress Celene about Riftwatch's internal workings, we need to know so we can take that into account before writing a mod plot or approving a player plot that hinges on Celene having no idea what Riftwatch is doing.

There's no need to tell us about every single thing your character does, of course! But you're welcome to err on the side of letting us know about minor things, and you won't annoy us by submitting reports for things we wind up not really needing to know. If we write plots or approve player plots that are inconsistent with something your character has been doing privately that you didn't tell us about, we might not be able to retroactively change it to accommodate their past actions.
