Canon World
Our world, but Christmas.
Snow Falls is a picturesque little hamlet located an indeterminate distance outside of the Big City. Somehow festooned with Christmas decorations year round, it's subject to a light dusting of oddly crystalized snow at random opportune moments throughout the day. Featuring a main street dotted with small businesses and a blissful, strangely cohesive assortment of townspeople strolling, whistling and shopping, you're just as likely to encounter a Santa Clause as you are a cell phone. (Is that a pager? A flip phone? Hard to tell, but isn't the near-analog vibe just so charming?)
An undetermined distance outside the town is the Ross family farm. Always sporting a fresh layer of snow, this Christmas tree farm is a popular hot spot for townspeople to gather for dramatic conversations.
History
★ Brad was born at the stroke of midnight on Christmas day to two proud, happy parents. Eldest of seventeen siblings, Brad was a shoe-in to take over the family's Christmas tree farm before he had even managed to toddle.
★ An enduring family story: the time Brad was LOST on the tree farm and Mom found him sleeping under a Douglas fir.
★ Brad and all his siblings grew up working on the farm, learning the ropes, right down to how to eyeball the most shapely pines from thirty yards away and secure a tree to a car roof with one hand tied behind their back.
★ The Ross family loves Snow Falls. Dad is a Pillar of the Community. According to the Ross family, giving back to their neighbors is almost as important as preparing for the post-Thanksgiving tree rush. Every year, Brad helps Dad nurture the finest tree on their farm to be donated to the annual Christmas festival in the town square.
★ With Dad getting older, Brad has to step up and start taking over day to day operations on the farm. With the help of his siblings, they expand the business and buy a whole new acre of property. This year, they can sponsor TWO youth baseball leagues.
★ But business can't boom forever. Big Christmas is trying to muscle in on their scene. Fake Christmas trees are appearing at the craft store in town, and when Brad and Dad crunch the numbers, it's looking rough for the family farm.
★ How can anyone fight Big Christmas? With reindeer.
★ Even though Brother #3 says it's nuts, Brad buys a few reindeer. They're not going to just give Snow Falls the best Christmas Tree they've ever seen. They're going to give Snow Falls the best reindeer within fifty miles.
★ Who wants a reindeer ride? Come on down.
★ Protagonist shows up in town. Gross. She's from the Big City. She uses a pager. She probably works on Christmas Eve now, even though Brad remembers when they were childhood sweethearts and she would never do something like that. And now she wants Brad to sell her company the best tree on their farm for a hefty sum, basically stealing it from the town's Christmas festival. Disgusting.
★ They do need that money though.
★ Can these reindeer save the farm from Big Christmas? Do they sell their prize tree to Protagonist instead of donating it to the town for the Christmas festival on the square? Will the protagonist give in to her feelings and smooch Brad under the mistletoe? We're coming up on ninety minutes, anything can happen, folks!
★ Too bad Brad fell through a rift before he could find out how any of these plots resolve. (Who can say what might happen!)
Personality
I give you one word: Wholesome.
Sure, Brad has his flaws. He cares too much. He's a little too devoted to the family business. He spends all his time tending to his sixteen siblings, when he isn't raising baby reindeer. It might make you wonder, when is there going to be time for me?
But if you can get past all that, there's a really great guy in there. He's devoted to his home. He knows how to light a fire by rubbing two sticks together. He has stubble that magically never blossoms into a full beard. He loves three things: his family, his town, and Christmas.
A natural leader, Brad's the most likely to stand up in a crowd of arguing people and point out the obvious common sense solution that no one thought of before now. He's reliable; you always know you can find him in the barn, or out in the town square at night, or trust him to appear at the best AND the worst moment for him to be there.
And if all that wasn't enough, he's got a whole closet full of soft, manly cardigans, one for every possible occasion. We all know what that says about him, right?
Strengths & Weaknesses
★ Animal-handling: need some help with your halla? ★ Good timing: have you slipped on the many, many stairs in the Gallows and dropped all your papers? Here's a guy who sure can appear to help you pick everything up and soothe your injured pride. ★ Survival Skills: call on him for all your wood-splitting, hunting, and tracking needs. ☆ Small Town Boy: he's never lived in a big city like Kirkwall before. How's he supposed to find his way around?? ☆ Technophobe: You're telling him he has to have a crystal on him at all times? What does he look like, Ryan BigCity?
The stablemaster post has been vacant forever, and it's tailormade for Brad. He's a natural leader, and his experience with breeding reindeer is going to give him a real advantage with Riftwatch's mounts, griffons included.
