The thing I think I haven't managed to make clear is that John doesn't have any magic ability in himself. In his world, anyone can do magic if they read the right books or are otherwise taught. To give him magic capability in Thedas the way I think you're suggesting would be giving him powers, basically, so I'll just go with him not having anything. Which is totally fine for me! It'll just make him very 'poke everything with sticks', and therefore a perfect fit for Research :D
