So, um... the wheelchair doing differential equations was mostly a joke (and has been removed because of that >.< ). However in one of the arcs of Birds of Prey she does have a wheelchair that can go up stairs. It isn't ever explained how it is powered, beyond "gyros and half a dozen motherboards under the seat" and after that arc it isn't ever seen again. This is the only page we ever really see it go up stairs in: http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/files/images/oraclecanary.400%20pixel%20width%20of%20page.jpg
The chair seems to have an extra foot in the back that can extend and retract as needed? (I never liked the look of that chair, preferring the more streamlined normal chair she has, but the concept was always kind of cool).
Now I am MORE than okay with her having a normal wheelchair. Actually after thinking about it, I might prefer it. She does have a normal chair for the majority of the run and in most of the books. Although it would be difficult for her to get around Skyhold without it, she can always ask for help. Which might be a good plot thing. (There's also the magic possibility of healing, that had occurred to me. ...how do people do physical therapy in Thedas?)
In all versions of Barbara's wheelchair, there are hidden escrima sticks and hidden batarangs (usually in the armrests) as a security precaution. Sometimes the sticks are slipped in on the chair's back but that's unusual. Please let me know. :)
