Everyone except dwarves (who don't dream) visits the Fade when they sleep--that's what dreaming in Thedas is. Mages are unique in their ability to essentially lucid dream, meaning they have more awareness of the Fade and its inhabitants and know that the things they see aren't real, versus everyone else experiencing it in a hazier way equivalent to real-life dreaming.
