We're not opposed to characters dying in-game, since plenty of people die in pursuit of the Inquisition's goals. It's something we'd like to discuss with a player before it happens to make sure it fits in with what's going on and doesn't cause any significant issues. The exception is canon Dragon Age characters, since re-apping a different version of them isn't possible and once they're dead in-game they're dead for good. While there may be circumstances where their deaths become unavoidable, at this time we would prefer to avoid irrevocably removing them from play if we can realistically do so.
The deaths of some characters are important to game canon or to the established backgrounds of other canon characters and cannot be altered, like those of Duncan, Cailin, or the Divine. With minor characters there may be some flexibility. It would depend on the character, on the impact un-killing them would have, and on whether it's possible to plausibly explain the different outcome. For instance, Felix Alexius is dead in canon, but because in our game the events at Redcliffe happened so recently, it is plausible for him to still be alive while a solution is sought. The Hawke siblings could both be alive in Fade Rift, since the death of one at the beginning of DA2 is an OOC party-balancing contrivance and events in the story don't otherwise make either of their deaths a certainty.
