Leadership
LEADERSHIP
The Gallows' four Inquisition Divisions and nine Projects (listed and described here) each have IC leaders. The Kirkwall outpost is a small outfit that consists almost entirely of player characters—there are no vague veteran NPCs with more experience than our own characters to fill the leadership roles here. So whenever possible, these leadership roles will be filled by PCs, with NPCs invented only when necessary.
Click here for a list of current IC leaders and their roles.
TYPES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Division Heads: If your character isn't a Division Head, they report to one. Division Heads have IC authority over your characters: they can issue orders, punish misbehavior, approve or disapprove requests for resources for plot efforts, etc. Members are required to listen to them and may be punished or asked to leave if they refuse. Allies or guests may be refused work/pay or otherwise receive less favorable treatment if they aren't cooperative. On a happier note, Division Heads oversee divisions, may organize training or assist new members, and can direct responses or priorities during mod plots that have variable ways to react.
IC, Division Heads are tasked with managing Division personnel. This includes delegation. If your character wants to appoint a second-in-command or divide the division into smaller pieces run by other characters, that's fine! If they want to micromanage, that's also fine. They oversee relevant operations, set priorities and handle discipline within the organization. Division Heads must reside and work in the Gallows full-time and must be official members of the organization (rather than mercenaries and so on).
OOC, Division Heads' players will be asked to generate missions/mini-plots (with help from us) to provide work for other character to do to advance the war effort between major events. Players must be active and reasonable available to others for plot-related RP. They also need to prioritize facilitating ideas and OOC collaboration, even if their characters are difficult people IC.
Project Leaders: These characters do not necessarily outrank other characters, but they are in charge of the project and have IC authority over project-related activities. Project Leaders can organize efforts related to their projects, which will generally OOC take the form of coming up with plots to advance the project's goal.
IC, Project Leaders provide direction and oversight for other characters working on the project, including supporting/guiding those with their own ideas or research pursuits. They organize efforts within the scope of the project, marshal information, and report on progress to the Division Heads. They should also act as point people for new characters who want to assist with the project or anyone who has relevant information.
OOC, Project Leaders will be asked to generate missions/mini-plots relevant to the project's goals and help advance everyone's efforts in those area. They also need to be active and reasonably available for plot-related RP, and they need to prioritize facilitating ideas and OOC collaboration, even if their characters are difficult people IC.
Assistant Project Leaders: Serve as seconds to Project Leaders and collaborate with them to come up with ideas and to lead.Assistant Project Leaders can perform all of a Project Leader's duties as well, with the oversight and approval of the Project Leader.
Other Leaders: In addition to these roles, there are a number of other official positions of authority over different aspects of the base's work available. A full list of IC leadership positions, including information such as specific job descriptions and current vacancies, is posted here. (Note: these positions are for the head/lead individual in a given role. If you want your character to work primarily in the stables, they don't have to be The Stablemaster to do so, and you don't have to apply for it—you can go sign them up for Base Operations as a stablehand or assistant whenever you want.) These are primarily IC positions, with minimal OOC responsibilities. But if you want to create plots/missions relevant to your character's job, you're definitely welcome to.
Turnover
If you sign up for a position and later find you're not able to keep up with it OOC or just not enjoying it anymore, please contact us! We can help make arrangements for your character to step down without it reflecting poorly on them (unless you want it to reflect poorly on them, of course), and it will be easiest to do so if we can do that in advance rather than after the position has ICly been neglected. Characters may also lose their positions as consequences for IC misbehavior, but barring egregious "your character murdered civilians and bathed in their blood and obviously you should have known there would be consequences" situations, this will always be discussed with players in advance.
APPLICATIONS
IC leaders will be selected by the mods, with new appointments chosen at the start of every month. Please check the Calendar for upcoming deadlines and this list for current vacancies. In making our decisions on leadership applications, we take into account the following factors:
Each player can have a maximum of two characters in IC leadership positions. Only one of those positions can be a Division Head or Project Leader role. If you submit applications for more than two characters to take on these roles, please make sure you indicate your order of preference. You may submit more than one application per character, but a character may only have one role, so again, make sure you indicate your order of preference. Additionally, if you apply for Project Leader, we will assume that you are also interested in the Assistant spot. If you are only interested in heading the project, please note that in your application. You can also apply specifically to be an Assistant Project Leader if that's your preference or what you think is more realistic for your character.
To apply, reply to the appropriate comment below. Assistant Project Leader applications should use the Project Leader app and specify that they're interested in the Assistant role. Applications are screened.
