PLAYER

Name: Mini
Age: 30+
Contact: PM, permissions/info post
Other Characters: n/a
Interests: Continuing this character's emerging awareness of the inherent conflicts in his idealism versus reality, how his goals cannot be achieved without compromise, how this translates into the overarching plot of Fade Rift re: war, essentially, and the bias associated with magic. Seeing how far he strays from his path and if he can forge a new one or if he rolls into a ditch (wee). Potentially science crimes redux, hopefully stupid shit.

Canon World

Piltover is a small nation/city state that focuses on steampunk-flavored innovative science and progress. It was founded a few hundred years ago as a refuge away from the strife between mages and therefore is vehemently against magic. Over time, the well-to-dos kept doing better and the rest of the populace fell behind, leading to a societal split between "topside" (Piltover) and "the undercity", where mining and Piltover's runoff has turned the place into a toxic environment. Naturally, this created tension between the two populaces. The undercity tried to fight for their independence once; it ended horribly for them. A couple decades later, they try again in a far less direct and more insidious manner.

History

CW: transient suicidal intent
Wiki entry.

- Son of a minor House known for their toolmaking (the collapsible pocket wrench was their claim to fame, ayy). Parents recognized Jayce was a dreamer with an interest in innovation and traveled with him around the world to broaden his horizons.
- One of these trips stranded him and his mother in a blizzard; they would have died without the help of a random and mysterious mage that teleported them out of it. This inoculated Jayce with his fascination of magic and his attempts to recreate it through adolescence and young adulthood via more traveling and unsanctioned research while juggling school (and continuing with the forge, I guess, because he beefy.)
- Said research caught the attention of an undercity pawn shop he spent too much gold at; he was followed and later robbed, which resulted in an explosion and the exposure of his """independent study""".
- Placed on trial because Magic Is Dangerous, given an out but didn't take it because he's too goddamn passionate and stubborn about his work. Banished from school, nearly banished from Piltover. With his life's ambition down the shitter, decided life wasn't living. Enter Viktor, who recognized the potential in his research. Together, they completed the first step of his research, naming it Hextech. Partners in crime became partners in Hextech, possible with the support of a young, similarly minded politician named Mel.

- Piltover is a major trading power through an airship teleportation system via Hextech. Jayce is the face of Hextech and Piltover's golden boy. He and Viktor stabilized Hextech, created prototype tools to help the working class, but their boss vetoed release on the potential danger of said tools in the wrong hands.
- The stabilized power source is stolen by someone from the undercity, not without casualty to Piltover law enforcement. Civil unrest between the two cities threatens to escalate to war. Jayce gets entangled in politics as he tries to rectify the damage, discovers various degrees of corruption amongst the politicians and law enforcements, makes unilateral decisions with unintentional consequences and strays from Hextech as he grows closer to Mel and farther from Viktor.
- Eventually gets frustrated with the corruption and inaction of the other politicians, takes matters into his own hands with someone from the undercity who is similarly frustrated with the situation (for different reasons), and conducts a violent raid on a drug production plant that results in the deaths of several law enforcement officers during the conflict and a child worker by his own hand.
- Horrified by his actions, he returns to Piltover and is punted into Thedas on the way back.

Personality

Alright, so we've got a conventionally handsome, beefy blacksmith of notable intelligence and moderate charm that develops a world-changing device with his partner and becomes the city's golden boy. Is Jayce a Gary Stu? At first glance, yeah.

Though intelligent and focused, he lacks wisdom and temperance. He possesses a strong sense of idealism, and though his intentions originate from a genuinely good place, his execution can be naïve and overbearing, failing to anticipate or account for the consequences of his actions. He is generally quick to action, a behavior likely learned in the forge where a plan of action must be determined beforehand because there is no time for doubt when you're working with molten material. This confidence also lends itself to impulsive decisions made without consulting those he trusts or those who would be impacted by his decision.

The general public sees a charismatic, smart innovator. His immediate peers see a dedicated, albeit professionally distant, individual. He may be pinned as egotistical in the confident, direct manner with which he conducts himself. His inner circle, those he feels at ease amongst, see his moments of doubt and vulnerability, from the unkempt mess of working close to a deadline or the frenzy of being right on the edge of a solution to the conundrum of balancing conflicting opinions. On the latter, Jayce seeks the approval of those he respects to a fault, and when theirs are the conflicting opinions, he's shown to follow the general stance of the last person with whom he's spoken. This results in two key interpersonal conflicts: the risks versus rewards of advancing Hextech between his mentor and his partner, respectively, and the pressure to use Hextech for weaponry in the name of defending Piltover between his love interest and his partner. As he's increasingly pulled in different directions, Jayce is challenged to re-evaluate his idealism in the face of reality. This comes to a head when his direct action results in the death of a child.

Over the course of the series, we see Jayce aim high of his own volition and thrust into sticky situations, and he makes mistakes and stumbles. Each time, he picks himself back up, reassesses, and tries again. As he says of Piltover, "We're no strangers to failure. What makes this the City of Progress is that we keep trying until we get it right." He embodies the resilience and ambition of Piltover, as well as its ignorance to the plight of the undercity. He leans into its prejudice, too, splintering the trust his partner holds in him, but displays the ability to, again, reassess and adjust his approach toward a solution.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Skills/etc:
engineer (design and application), scientist (physics primarily, focused interest in metals and minerals specifically regarding Hextech; no evidence of exhibiting biochemistry knowledge), blacksmith, schmoozing/networking to obtain financial support for Hextech endeavors, displays a moderate amount of melee combat knowledge that canon doesn't explain so I'm assuming he learned self-defense during his travels(???), mooscles

Traits:
+ ambitious, dreamer, adaptive, confident, intelligent
- impulsive, naïve, people pleaser (selectively), self-absorbed

Suggested Nerfs

Don't nerf these pecs, please, they're one of his best attributes.

Arrival Inventory

- His normal attire + bespoke jacket.
- ~*~guilt~*~
- In his TDM thread, his warhammer turned into a squeaky toy but I think I'mma nix that and just say it vanished when the rift spit him out.

Humanization

Normal-ass human.

Fit

Honestly, didn't know about this game until Viktor's player mentioned it. Haven't been in a game for years due to IRL obligations and haven't played any Dragon Age games, but I do enjoy fantasy settings so I took a look around and would like to give it a shot! Jayce would be jumping from the brink of civil war into "war against demons trying to take over the world", so facing similar ethical conflicts and how he might approach them in a world lacking in personal attachments (aside from Viktor, ruh roh). He'll probably end up in the Research division because he's primarily a scientist-slash-engineer, and I'd like to see him faced with the controversy of lyrium application and use. On the other hand, I think he's got the potential to accept violence as a necessary "evil" during times of war and follow that path instead. Either way, would also like him to tinker and invent for Riftwatch, and if said invention(s) end up being used for combat purposes or designed for combat upfront, how he would approach it.
