APPLICATIONS

↠ Applications will open on the first day of each month at 12:01 a.m. EST/EDT and close on the 5th of each month at 11:59 p.m. EST/EDT.

APPLICATION FORMS

Before applying, please read the FAQ and the Rules. In addition to a lot of other useful information, the Rules page details the caps and restrictions in place for certain character types. Native characters need to conform to Fade Rift's World State. Please also consult the App Guide for information regarding concepts we consider rare, name requirements, and some advice on AUs.

Please make sure the subject line of your comment includes your character's name, canon, whether they are a native or a rifter, and whether or not they were reserved. Please link to your application rather than pasting it into the comment. If you need help with samples, check the the test drive meme for prompts.

Native Characters

Use this application form to app characters native to Thedas, including Dragon Age canon characters, native OCs, and fully AU'd canon characters.

History

If possible, please link to your character's history. If the linked history has significant holes that you plan to fill in with headcanon, please provide a write-up of that headcanon here in 500 words or fewer. If your character has been off-screen for a while, please provide a write-up of what they've been doing since their last appearance and their arrival in Fade Rift. This should also be no more than 500 words.

If apping an AU'd character, please link to their canon history and write up their AU history in 500 words or fewer. Bullet points are fine if you prefer.

Original characters obviously don't have a linkable history, so please just write it up in 500 words or fewer. Bullet points are still fine if you prefer.

Personality

Please describe your character's personality in 300-500 words.

Opinions & Affiliations

Please (briefly, in 300 words or fewer) note your characters' opinions on topics such as the Chantry, the Qun, the Mage/Templar War, Thedosian race relations, etc. "Doesn't know and doesn't care" is an acceptable response if that's the case! If your character is currently or has previously been a member of an IC organization or identifiable group other than the Inquisition, please also briefly describe their relationship with that organization or group. This includes obvious things like Templars, Seekers, Circle Mages, and Grey Wardens, but it can also be used for less organized groups such as Dalish elves, landed nobility, etc., if you have something you'd like to say on the topic that isn't covered in the personality section.

Adaptation

If your character is being AU'd from another canon, please explain in 500 words or less how the adaptation you've chosen is a good fit for your character. This should include things like why you've chosen to make them a mage, or a particular race, or a member of a particular organization. How do these choices reflect essential aspects of their canon character? What key features are you adding or subtracting from the canon version of their story and why? (There is no single right answer to this question; there may be lots of acceptable ways to AU a character. We're interested in understanding why you've chosen the things you've chosen as part of evaluating your grasp on the character and on the setting.)

Strengths & Weaknesses

Basically, what are they best at, and what are they worst at? Where can they help and where will they be a liability? It is not necessary to pick a class or to provide lists of specific Dragon Age skills or skill trees. It's sufficient to give us a general idea of areas and level of ability but please make sure you cover any magical ability or significant skill/resource/connection you hope to rely on in-game.

Inventory

Please list any notable objects your character will be bringing with them.

Motivation

What brings your character to the Inquisition? This can be as brief as "he's got a sliver of weird magic in his hand he'd like the Inquisition to deal with," and shouldn't be more than 200 words.

SAMPLES

Please provide 2 samples. It doesn't matter if they're written or linked and we don't care if you prefer brackets or normal punctuation, but at least one must take place in the game world, and at least one must be a log rather than network tags (or their setting-appropriate equivalent). They can be of any length, as long as they provide a sense of your character's voice and internal narrative. If we feel they aren't sufficient, we'll ask you for more.

Rifter Characters

Use this application to app any characters arriving via rift, which includes canon characters who are not AU'd, OCs not native to Thedas, and fandom OCs.

Canon World

In no more than 500 words, please describe the world your character comes from. Don't try to cover everything, just focus on the key points that an unfamiliar reviewer would absolutely have to know in order to understand your character and their abilities.

History

Please provide a summary of key points in your character's history in no more than 500 words. Bullet points are fine if you prefer. If there is a wiki (or similar) history of your character available, please also provide a link in addition to the summary.

Personality

Please describe your character's personality in 300-500 words.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Basically, what are they best at, and what are they worst at? Where can they help and where will they be a liability? It's sufficient to give us a general idea of areas of expertise and level of ability. While this needn't be 100% exhaustive, any powers/magic/significant areas of expertise not listed here cannot later be used in game.

If your character has superhuman abilities, please describe these abilities in plain terms. Although Fade Rift is based on a video game, we don't write about abilities or attacks as if they are occurring in a video game. For example, characters will not have an ability called "Whirlwind" that enables them to spin in a circle and strike things with a sword. Just tell us they can use a greatsword and they're agile.

Additionally, many (if not most) abilities from other canons will be nerfed or adapted to place them on par with native abilities -- we want rifters to be permitted to be unique, but not so overpowered that they render native characters superfluous to missions. Some limitations that will apply to every character include being vulnerable to the Blight even if they are immune to other diseases, only being able to use magical abilities on people or objects within their line of sight, and being exhausted by the use of magical abilities even if the character has no energy limits in their canons. Other limits will be worked out on a case by case basis. If you have ideas for nerfing or adapting your character's abilities, please let us know what they are!

Arrival Inventory

What will your character have with them in the dream they arrive from? Please go ahead and list weapons, technology, and magical artifacts, though they may disappear in the passage through the Fade.

'Human'ization

Please describe any ways that your character differs from a normal real world human. If the rules require that your character exit the rift in a different form, what form would you like that to be?

Fit

Is there a reason you think this character would be particularly interesting in this setting? Are there particular aspects of the world you're hoping to dig into? Things about your character you think Thedas will help you explore? Will they have a personal connection to an issue, or act as a foil to another character/group/opinion? Give us a sense of what you think your character will bring to the game world and what you think they might take away from it. Basically, why did you choose this character in this game? This shouldn't be more than 300 words.

CANON UPDATES

Once in Thedas, rifters don't return to their home universes unless they are dropped and later reapped by the same person. However, your character may acquire new memories from time after their originally apped canon point while asleep and traveling in the Fade. (If your character is a dwarf, please contact us for alternate options.) Your character will not change physically--no new scars, no overnight aging--but the memories will feel as real as if they had experienced them directly. This option is available to both canon and original rifter characters.

If you would like to use this mechanism to update your character, you can do so by submitting the following form as a comment during the application period.

APPING PREVIOUSLY PLAYED CHARACTERS

We allow reapps of dropped characters by both the previous player and new players. Dropped rifters disappear mysteriously; dropped natives fade into the background or are sent away on longterm missions. Rifters and canon native AU characters may be reapped by previous players with their in-game memories intact or by both previous and new players with a clean slate. New versions of AU characters will be different people who happen to share similarities with prior versions but can have a new AU history, class, etc., as determined by the new player.

Dropped Dragon Age canon characters are a little trickier. If you would like to app one of these characters, we suggest contacting us first; we can let you know the extent of the character's previous in-game activity and discuss specific options for keeping or discarding that character's past involvement. For characters who were only briefly present in the game, it may be possible to retcon their involvement entirely and allow a new player to start fresh. For characters that were around for a while and may have established CR that other characters can't easily retcon, we can work with new players to allow for (selective) memory loss via an in-game mechanic.

The following Dragon Age characters have been previously played:

  • Aveline Vallen
  • Belinda Darrow
  • Blackwall
  • Cassandra Pentaghast
  • Dorian Pavus

    Osanwe / Galadriel's Mind/Heart Reading

    [personal profile] laurenande 2015-10-20 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I quite like the idea that she'll have to learn to re-purpose her own magic to Thedas's constraints. And, of course, I will gladly consult with you on matters of her Mirror (if or when she ever uses it). Even Galadriel is reluctant to encourage people to take what the mirror shows as the wholesale truth as it can be wildly unpredictable in what it chooses to depict; I can't imagine an instance where I wouldn't need to consult with you about it, just because what it shows could be so varied and because the World-state is so unique.

About her mind/heart-reading ability, there's actually a manuscript about it, though I can't seem to find a copy online.

It's a technique (called Ósanwe) that the Elves of Arda classify along with language, as it predated worded speech and was, summarily, replaced by it. The technique was all but lost as language developed and telepathy became more difficult for incarnated beings (creatures with hröa). At it's core it's not really a technique that's specific to Galadriel so much as Elves in general, but it's essentially become hers as she seems to be the best person at it and, quite probably, the last person who knows how to do it.

Naturally its limitations and actual processes are excruciatingly vague.

In the books the ability is entirely wordless and involves Galadriel offering up the desires of each of the Fellowship with the sense that, should they take her offer and turn away, it would be without consequence. That's a complex series of actions, however, and involves her being able to infer something as abstract as desires and memories, to influence a very nuanced level of emotion, but seemingly unable to take measure of their active thoughts/will. The offer she makes is described, by each of the members of the Fellowship, as though they saw the image of what they wanted most.

She seems unable to discern the minds of other ringbearers (or at least Gandalf (who is markedly not human/does not have hröa and thus not really a grand benchmark for this), but she doesn't appear to have issues reading Frodo's mind or, for that matter, Sauron's) and is often surprised by the actions that people take, so the ability has some vague practical limitations.

Oddly it doesn't seem to be affected by distance at all, as she uses it multiple times to communicate across large portions of Middle-earth.

In the movies it was interpreted as her being able to speak directly into the minds of the Fellowship and being able to see what they (or at least Frodo) saw. I suspect this was done for dramatic effect and because filming people traveling home is both impractical and expensive. Even in this form, though, she is surprised by both Frodo's offer of the ring (given telepathically, implying she can read active thought) and the actions of others (Gimli asking for her hair).

However this ability operates, or whether Nenya is involved in concealing her mind, Galadriel's thoughts are unreadable (at the very least to Sauron).

I'm not certain how the other apps involving this sort of thing have been limited, so I can't offer suggestions that would be consistent, but I had a few thoughts about it in relation to actual RP.

For practical purposes in RP, I imagine it would be easier (and would involve far fewer paragraphs of description) to have her communicate with words rather than images. I would also readily give up her ability to manipulate emotion (complex or otherwise) because, even with permissions, that's just this side of godmodding. Whether she can read actual memories or just take away impressions/desires/fears is also up for debate and could be entirely variable, based on either/both permissions and mod approval.

(It seems important to note that her ability to detect "darkness" in people is not, necessarily, an ability to detect ill-will so much as actual physical/spiritual corruption. The only exceptions to this have been Feanor (who was kind of a massive dick even before being a massive dick was a thing) and a few other scattered examples of really bad dudes who want to or are willing to seriously hurt people for their own gain.

This ability would be only moderately useful, even at full power, in say...the Orlesian Court. Without context and assuming nobody actually a) thinks of themselves as evil or b) plans on killing literally everyone, common sense would be a far more useful skill. This power of detection would also cause her to be ridiculously suspicious of Grey Wardens despite the vast majority of them being fairly excellent people. It's not a super accurate guide.)

That all sounds perfectly excellent, I'm on board 100%!

Since the last caveat is a bit vague (by general necessity), if you feel that I'm not making her use of this ability take a considerable enough toll on her, please let me know and I'll adjust accordingly.
