APPLICATIONS

Applications generally always open (unless otherwise announced and noted) and will be processed on a rolling basis, as quickly as possible.

Before applying, please read the FAQ and the Rules. In addition to a lot of other useful information, the Rules page details the caps and restrictions in place for certain character types. Native characters need to conform to Fade Rift's World State and should take a look at the Timeline of major events that have occurred in the game's version of Thedas. You may also want to check out this post about our incorporation of Veilguard canon and characters.

RESERVES

To reserve a character, you can comment to this page with a blank comment. You'll have one week to edit your comment to link to a completed application. E.g., you can post a blank comment for Dagna at 1 p.m. on June 1 and will have until that same time on June 8 to finish your application and edit the comment to include it. Do not update your comment until your application is complete. Expired reserve comments will be removed after the deadline passes. Consecutive reserves for the same character are not allowed—you must wait at least one week after your reserve expires to reserve the same character a second time.

FORMAT NOTES

Please paste your application into the comment body, rather than linking it. The subject line of your comment should include your character's name and canon (if they have one). Please don't include any images or adjust the app's style—it's plain to make it easy to read. Also, please make sure you're truly finished with your application before you post it; there are no app deadlines to meet so no rush, and we get notifications for every edit you make, which can get annoying very quickly. And note that we do strictly enforce our word count limits, even if you're only a little over!

Opinions & Affiliations

This section has a 300 word limit. Please briefly note your characters' opinions on topics such as the Chantry, the Qun, the Mage/Templar War, Thedosian race relations, and anything else you feel is worth mentioning for a particular character! If your character is currently or has previously been a member of an IC organization or identifiable group other than Riftwatch, please also briefly describe their relationship with that organization or group. This includes obvious things like Templars, Seekers, Circle Mages, and Grey Wardens, but it can also be used for less organized groups such as Dalish elves, landed nobility, etc., if you have something you'd like to say on the topic that isn't covered in the personality section.

Adaptation Notes

If your character is being AU'd from another canon, please explain in 300 words or fewer how the adaptation you've chosen is a good fit for your character. This should include things like why you've chosen to make them a mage, or a particular race, or a member of a particular organization. How do these choices reflect essential aspects of their canon character? What key features are you adding or subtracting from the canon version of their story and why? There is no single right answer to this question; there may be lots of plausible ways to AU a given character. We're interested in understanding why you've chosen the things you've chosen as part of evaluating your grasp on the character and on the setting.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Basically, what are they best at, and what are they worst at? How can they assist Riftwatch and where will they be a liability? This can include personality strengths and weaknesses as well as any skills or special abilities. It is not necessary to pick a class or to provide lists of specific Dragon Age skills or skill trees, but you can use classes and skill trees as a reference to discuss what your character is and isn't good at, such as saying a mage is good at primal magic but useless with entropy, etc. It's sufficient to give us a general idea of areas and level of ability, but please make sure you mention any magical ability or significant skill/resource/connection you hope to rely on in-game. Please make sure to read and comply with the FAQ sections on character abilities.

Inventory

Please list any notable objects your character will be bringing with them. This doesn't have to be exhaustive, but weapons, magical objects, and items with plot importance must be listed if you plan to use them in the game.

Motivation

What brings your character to Riftwatch? This can be as brief as "he's got a sliver of weird magic in his hand he'd like Riftwatch to deal with" or "he wants to help," though more complex reasons are welcome, and shouldn't be more than 200 words.

SAMPLES

Please provide 2 samples. It doesn't matter if they're written or linked and we don't care if you prefer brackets or normal punctuation, but at least one of your samples must take place in the game world, and at least one must be a log rather than network tags (or their setting-appropriate equivalent). Suggested Nerfs

Many (if not most) abilities from other canons will be nerfed or adapted to Thedas. We want rifters to be unique and retain what makes them fun to play, but not to be so powerful that they render natives and especially unpowered characters superfluous to missions. A list of universally applied power limits is in the FAQ (http://faderifting.dreamwidth.org/966.html#nerfs). These nerfs will apply to all rifters unless we discuss a specific exception with you. Additionally, we may place other limits on rifters' abilities to prevent them from being too powerful compared to natives and unpowered characters. So if you have a high-powered character, we encourage you to use this section of the app to suggest your own nerfs or let us know what's most and least important to you about their powerset so we can take it into consideration when we establish limits.

Arrival Inventory

What will your character have with them in the dream they arrive from? Please go ahead and list weapons, technology, and magical artifacts, though they may disappear in the passage through the Fade. And please note that we do mean what they have with them in their dream; they can arrive in plainclothes with their usual belongings from a dream about buying groceries, or they can arrive in a gorilla suit with a deflated hot air balloon from a dream that was a little less mundane.

Humanization

Please describe any ways that your character's canon form differs from that of a normal real world human. This should include all physiological differences, even if they're purely cosmetic (for instance, hair or eye color if not standard real world colors). Passage through the Fade will convert each character into a Thedas-standard human, elf, dwarf, or qunari. This means that in every physiological respect, both internal and external, they will be a member of one of those races.

Please note which skills or abilities are from canon and which were developed in your prior game. If your character has superhuman abilities in canon, in their past game, or both, you can choose (1) to keep their canon power set, (2) to keep their game power set, or (3) to lose both. Your character cannot keep both game-granted abilities and canon abilities. If your character's canon abilities were removed in their previous game, you can choose to have them regain them in FR.

CANON UPDATES

Once in Thedas, rifters don't return to their home universes unless they are dropped and later reapped by the same person. However, your character may acquire new memories from time after their originally apped canon point while asleep and traveling in the Fade. (If your character is a dwarf, please contact us for alternate options.) Your character will not change physically--no new scars, no overnight aging--but the memories will feel as real as if they've experienced them directly. This option is available to both canon and original rifter characters.

APPING PREVIOUSLY PLAYED CHARACTERS

We allow reapps of dropped characters by both the previous player and new players. Unless their players make other arrangements, dropped native characters generally fade into the background or are sent away on long-term missions. Dropped native AU characters may be reapped by their previous players with their in-game memories intact or by both previous and new players as a new person entirely, with a clean slate. Dropped rifters will have disappeared mysteriously from Thedas, unless killed off in-game prior to a drop. Previously played rifters may be reapped by their previous players with their in-game memories intact, or by both previous and new players with a clean slate.

Dropped Dragon Age canon characters are a little trickier. For characters who were only briefly present in the game or who were dropped a long time ago, it may be possible to retcon their involvement entirely and allow a new player to start fresh. For characters that were around for a while and may have established CR that other characters can't easily retcon, you can work with other players to determine what to keep and what to discard from character histories, and we can work with new players to allow for (selective) memory loss via an in-game mechanic.

If you plan to app a Dragon Age character, we recommend checking for a tag to see if they've previously been played, then contacting us to let us know if you're interested in a clean slate. If you don't want an entirely clean slate, most players who app previously played DA canon characters make OOC posts after acceptance to ask people to recap their previous CR, if any, and decide what CR to keep or change on a chase by case basis.

List of Dante's abilities

⦁ Supernatural Strength
-Dante's physical strength within his universe allows him to do things like punch through stone, overpower demons that are larger than him like the demon creation Savior, knocking the demon Chaos back with a flick of his finger. His physical strength also enables him to tear down Hell Gates which are supposed to be stronger than steel and take down an artificial demon the size of a skyscraper. He's also blocked punches from Savior who weighs tens of thousands of tons, he threw Nero at a wall with no effort, and has been able to knock back fireballs from demonic dragons. Dante's physical lifting strength is several thousand tons, but there's never been an exact number to measure how strong he is.

⦁ Supernatural Speed
-This we actually have some degree of measurement for. Dante is able to block the lightening based attacks of other Demons indicating that he is as fast or faster than the speed of lightening. His speed gives him the leverage to jump at incredible heights, dodge, and strike with accuracy. He's able to catch bullets with his teeth, shoot bullets out of the air, and split bullets in half while in a midair jump.

⦁ Supernatural Agility
-Dante's agility and dexterity allow for impossible aerial acrobatics and weapons accuracy. Dante's parkour skills are second to none allowing to maneuver on terrain that's not stable or jump along crumbling, flying debris. He has incredible balance and he's able to land a jump on an incredibly small target like the spire of a tall building. When Lady launched a rocket at him he was able to jump on the rocket and redirect it by riding on it. His dexterity enables him to shoot small targets accurately and successively. Such as with Agnus he shot the man's research documents and then he shot Agnus himself through the hole he'd made in his research documents. When fighting Savior in order to pierce his armor Dante threw Vergil's sword, the Yamato, at Savior, then fired several bullets in a line so that they stacked one behind the other giving each bullet enough force to plunge the Yamato into Savior.

⦁ Supernatural Stamina
-Dante has a great deal of staying power, able to sustain injuries and still move great distances or make smart ass remarks. Even when he's impaled by a sword Dante is able to pull the blade out and go on with his day, slowing down very little in the process. Traveling great distances on foot doesn't seem to wear him out and he doesn't require sustenance in the interim. His Stamina even extends to his ability to breathe, apparently he doesn't need to breathe underwater or in the vacuum of space.

⦁ Supernatural Durability
-While Dante's skin can be pierced by weapons and bullets he's been shown to sustain high levels of trauma such as being punched by Beowulf, shot in the head, or stabbed through the chest. He's been thrown into walls and off of high altitudes and survived. He was able to sit on the flaming tail of Berial the Conqueror without so much as getting burned, took multiple punches to the face by Nero without suffering any damage, and barely suffered under the crushing weight of Beowulf's brute strength. The only time he hasn't gotten back up immediately was when Urizen knocked him clear off of the Qliphoth, he survived it, but the impact and the fall itself put him into a month long coma.

⦁ Supernatural Senses
-This is also another minor one, but Dante has shown that he can sense attacks from miles off and he's been able to smell the presence of his enemies even when they cannot be seen. An example would be with the toad-like demons Bael and Dagon, who act very much like angler fish, luring their prey with shiny attractive objects while hiding in a storm. They were able to hide their physical presence from Dante, but he could smell their distinct body odor.

⦁ Accelerated Healing
-Dante's regenerative abilities allow him to recover from nearly any wound allowing him to heal almost instantly. Even wounds that should prove fatal lake being stabbed through he chest or a band of hell prides simultaneously running him through with scythes, even Lady shooting him in the head was a minor annoyance and he healed from it.

⦁ Demonic Power Mainipulation
-Dante's demonic power manipulation is this nebulous, limitless ability that includes, but is not limited to using his own demonic energy to charge weapons like Ebony and Ivory or even the air around him. Examples of him using his demonic energy to imbue things with demonic energy include allowing a motorcycle to coast vertically along a wall, charging a canon to blast energy at Savior, and giving his bullets the ability to take down entire structures. He has the ability to seal demons away, including immensely powerful demons like Mundus. He has the ability to absorb the power and abilities of other demons, especially those that he defeats, and he can fashion them into relics called Devil Arms.

⦁ Telekinesis
-The only example we've seen of this is Dante stopping Trish's motorcycle from hitting him in midair so he could blast it right back at her with Ebony and Ivory so while it seems to be an ability that he possesses there's not enough substantial instances of him using this ability that give it much in the way of utility. It's also overshadowed by later abilities that allow him to control time.

⦁ Styles
-Styles can be looked at like specializations in Dragon Age and Dante has access to seven types of styles. They are basically fighting styles that Dante switch between.
□ Royal Guard is a style that focuses on minimizing the damage that Dante takes and has four substyle abilities that go along with it.
-Just Block negates any damage taken.
-Release is a counterattack that reverses damage taken by an enemy and turns it back on the enemy.
-Ultimate blocks attacks but can use the energy from blocked attacks to fuel Dante's health regeneration.
-Dreadnaught can transform Dante's body into an impenetrable shell that is impervious to attack.

□ Gunslinger: What it says on the tin. Gunslinger is a style that maximizes the damage delivered by Ebony and Ivory.
□ Swordmaster: Similarly Swordmaster increases the amount of damage Dante is able to deliver with any close range weapon.
□ Trickster is a style that focuses on dodging and the ability to maneuver around a battle field and comes with three substyles.
-Air Trick allows Dante to teleport towards an enemy for a close range strike.
-Sky Star is very similar to air hike that gives Dante a platform he's able to kick off from pushing him forward horizontally.
-Flipper allows Dante to flip back into a safe zone when an enemy knocks him off of his feet.

□ Doppelganger allows Dante to make a copy of himself in battle.
□ Quicksilver allows Dante to slow down time around him temporarily.
□ Darkslayer makes his fighting style similar to Vergil's fighting style and it is a style he relies upon the least for this reason.


⦁ Devil Arms are weapons that are essentially manifestations of a deceased or a defeated demon's powers and possess varying degrees of sentience depending on whether or not the demon was defeated and opted to become a Devil Arm or whether the demon is dead. The only Devil Arm that Dante will have access to is the Devil Sword Sparda and apart from being a manifestation of Sparda's power, concealing Dante's presence from other demons, and changing its shape, the Devil Sword Sparda has no sentience about it. It cannot speak to him the way other Devil Arms throughout the series have been able to.
-Devil Sword Sparda: Combos and dueling abilities that Dante can perform aside, the Devil Sword Sparda has select abilities that come with it. Due to it's almost organic looking shape (in previous games it used to look more mechanical) its parts can move and be reformed to take the shape of a scythe or a spear. It can also enable the use of the ability Air Hike, a double jump created by a temporary platform.


⦁ Devil Trigger

-Stats buffer: speed, strength, stamina and durability get a boost while he's in this form.
-Access to demonic abilities: Demons have abilities that are broken up into three elemental classes lightening, fire, and ice. In his Devil Trigger form Dante has access to each of these demonic abilities. He is also able to slow down time in this form as well giving him something similar to the quicksilver ability.
-Regeneration: his regenerative abilities improve as well and he's able to recover a lot faster from injuries.
-Shapeshifting: he takes on a more demonic form.
-Limited flight: Dante does have wings, but his ability to actually fly in this form is limited to hovering and gliding.


Abilities that will not be kept

⦁ Demonic power manipulation: Due to being a nebulous ability with an infinite number of immeasurable moving parts this one is easily scrapped.
⦁ Telekenesis: another ability that is easily taken off of the table because of its lack of relevance and overall use.
⦁ Styles: is another one that can easily be knocked off of this list for the simple fact that Dante likely wouldn't use some of them anyway, does not use them consistently, or cannot use them i.e. gunslinger. It's also a lot to stack on top of what he already has and he won't suffer without it..

Abilities that will be kept and how they will be nerfed

⦁ Strength: Dante's strength would not be outside the realm of human capability, for example he would be able to overhead lift and deadlift within the capacity of what a human could lift which is 500 lbs and and 1000 lbs respectively and he would have a leg press capacity of about 2,200 lbs within the scope of human capability. As for materials he would be able to punch through Dante wouldn't be beyond the skill level of a martial artist who could punch through wood, concrete, or stone. He could likely go toe-to-toe with a Qunari and knock down unstable walls.
⦁ Speed: This one we've determined is limited to what a Fade-Step could achieve.
⦁ Agility: Dante's agility would give him the skills of someone who engages in competitive parkour as opposed to the supernatural, gravity defying acrobatics he would normally be prepossessed of. He would also be an expert swordsman and his precision with hitting a target would still be accurate, but not in the sense that he could do a flip in mid air while shooting a target through a hole he made in a research paper. It would be more akin to what archers are able to do while holding still and aiming, they can shoot an aspirin out of the air. He would actually have to try and aim and he would actually have to relearn how to do things like shoot since Ebony and Ivory are bricked.
⦁ Stamina: Dante could cover a lot of ground in a day, around 100 miles without need for rest or food but he would be subject to the rules of three. Instead of not needing oxygen he would require it after 3 minutes, he would need water after 3 days, he would need food after 3 weeks. While Dante would be able to take hits he wouldn't be able to sustain several severe wounds and continue to press on.
⦁ Durability and Healing: We've touched on this and I'll lump durability with healing because in this sense what he can recover from is related to what he's able to take in terms of damage. As a recap he will not be able to heal severe wounds or reattach severed limbs. His healing capacity can be exhausted so one small wound would heal fine, but consecutive small wounds would take longer to heal or would stop healing completely until he's had the time to rest. He can recover from one would-be-fatal wound per day. If he receives enough injuries in a short amount of time he would succumb to death. He is not immune to the blight or red lyrium.
⦁ Senses: I would reduce this from seeing attacks coming from miles off to intuiting when someone will attack and having a general aptitude for sensing the space around him when he's fighting.

So aside from durability/healing Dante currently falls into the realm of what human beings can do.

⦁ Devil Arms: the Devil Arm Sparda would be able to reshape itself into a spear or a scythe. The sword can also grant him Air Hike and the ability to disguise Dante's presence from Demons, I am not wholly attached to these abilities so if you want to eliminate them or limit them I leave that entirely to your discretion.

⦁ Devil Trigger: I would like to incorporate his devil trigger with extreme limitations and power capping of course.
-Speed: would not be impacted, the same rules would still apply.
-Strength: His lifting, deadlifting, and leg pressing strength would be doubled. He'd be able to bend iron and punch through steel. He could break through reinforced walls. If he could go toe-to-toe with a Qunari he could go toe-to-toe with an Ogre.
-Stamina: Dante will have less staying power in this form because he will not be able to hold it indefinitely as he would be able to normally. He will actually fatigue quickly.
-Durability: No change from the above.
-Shapeshifting: He would take on his Devil form.
-Limited flight: Dante does possess the ability to hover/glide in his Devil Trigger form.
-Demonic Abilities: Includes access to lightening, fire, and ice. I am not attached to this so at your discretion if you want to make it something that he could only channel through a weapon and limited to what mages are capable of I am cool with taking it or leaving it.
-Consequences: Because his Devil Trigger would give him such a strength boost the cap on this would be limited to time and suffering he would sustain in maintaining this form and the damage would be relative to the the amount of downtime. He would maintain this form for around a minute before the form causes him severe pain that would take a great deal of downtime to recover from. I do want to navigate this one carefully with your help so however you think this should be dealt with I am good with.


So sorry this is so long, I wanted to cover the breadth of his abilities, some things have been left out because they are just too obscure or too elaborate and span outside of the games for me to consider them. Hopefully I've provided enough information about his powers and abilities and a more detailed method for scaling them down.
