Side Characters

SIDE CHARACTERS

Side characters are a middle ground between PCs and NPCs, with short apps and no AC. Our hope is to allow players to flesh out the environment with character types that are underrepresented in Fade Rift—commoners, Andrastians, people with more mundane skills or boring jobs or OOCly unpopular opinions, etc.—but who wouldn't necessarily be as fun to play with the same level of commitment as more unusual or sympathetic characters. If you think it would be fun to sometimes write a put-upon diplomat telling other characters to behave themselves or a haughty Chantry Sister judging heathens, that’s what this is for!

Alternatively, you can use side characters to test or develop vague concepts that you might be interested in apping as full characters later, or to play characters with a specific short-term arc, such as temporary allies or citizens that cross paths with Riftwatch somehow.

Side characters are not required to be Riftwatch members. You can play a Kirkwall local or an openly hostile antagonist. However, please keep in mind that unaffiliated characters won’t have access to sending crystals, and it’s your responsibility to keep them playable. We won’t provide plots or mechanisms to keep them from wandering away forever if that’s what they would do. And if you decide to app one as a normal PC later, they’ll have to join up.

This is not meant to allow anyone to indefinitely RP six full-fledged permanent characters, and especially not six strange egalitarian poster children with lots of special skills, so please use it in the intended spirit. Characters who have more unusual qualities than side characters warrant may be given time restrictions on how long they can be voice tested as side characters before becoming standard characters.

RULES

Character Limits
  1. You must be a current player who made full AC the prior month.
  2. You can have two side characters at a time, but you can only add one per month.
  3. You can app a side character as a full character at any time, as long as you have open slots. You can also change main characters to side characters if you want to put them on the back burner without dropping them. But you can’t use it just to dodge AC for a month or constantly rotate.
Character Types
  1. Side characters must be native OCs.
  2. They can’t be from any character category we limit to one-per-player.
Activity
  1. Side characters do not submit AC and are also not eligible to earn AC reward points.
  2. Other PCs can earn reward points by playing off of other people’s side characters.
Plot Involvement
  1. Side characters can be members of projects, but they aren’t eligible for any IC leadership roles.
  2. Side characters are allowed to participate in plots, but must be given lowest priority in sign-ups for any closed plot, including player plots. It’s fine for them to fill out a group that has empty slots, just not to take a slot that could otherwise go to a willing PC.
  3. You can propose your own player plots for your side characters, and obviously in that case the 'lowest priority' rule doesn't apply.

APPLICATION

Side character “apps” are very short and meant to encompass just the broad strokes of the character concept, to allow people time to figure details out in play. However, you can’t add big things like mod plot-relevant events or connections that were not included in the initial proposal. E.g., it’s fine not to tell us the details of a character's childhood if that childhood was pretty normal, but you can't then say that the character spent their childhood learning shapeshifting from the Chasind or is Corypheus' secret love child.

Please post your app in the body of the comment rather than linking it.

Goal: Briefly, in one or two sentences, are you planning for this character to stick around indefinitely? Voice testing a potential full PC? Apping a temporary character for a specific plot arc? (It’s fine for your plans to change later; we just want to know what you're up to now.)
About: In 100-500 words, tell us generally who this character is—key background facts or personality traits, opinions, skills or connections, etc. You don’t have to have every detail worked out, but you do have to tell us anything that’s hugely important, controversial, rare, or plot-relevant in advance. Otherwise, think of this like the elevator pitch section of a CR meme: what are the essentials that make your character who they are and set them apart?

CHARACTER

Name: Fifi Mariette
Race: elf
Nationality: Orlesian
Mage?: no
Age: 31
Affiliation: Inquisition, ostensibly
Occupation: housemaid to Thor and Loki
Goal: Just demoting a full character since my time has been pretty limited since she got in but I like her and want her to stick around! Rn she's spying on the Asgards for Beleth and will likely be content to do so for a while.
About: A former prostitute from Val Royeaux who spent some time with the Freemen of the Dales and then got busted trying to smuggle red lyrium, Fifi joined the Inquisition with her hands behind her back but quickly found her place here. It's very much in her nature to keep and wield secrets, so she's ideal for undercover work within the Inquisition itself. Despite this, she's very loyal to those who prove themselves worthy, and the Scoutmaster has a valuable tool in her.

Fifi is currently more appropriate as a side character, since she's unlikely to leave Kirkwall unless accompanying the Asgards, and is more or less devoted to the position she holds with them.

CHARACTER

Name: Romain Charnier, Duke of Coucy
Race: human
Nationality: Orlesian
Mage?: no
Age: 71
Affiliation: His family and Orlais, in that order
Occupation: Antagonizing Comte Vauquelin Administering the duchy, furthering his family's interests, keeping a hand in the Game
Goal: I enjoyed Romain the first time I played him, but he's really more a supporting player. Bringing him back without the pressure of feeling I need to plan bigger arcs for him (or make AC month-to-month) was really appealing.
About:

Romain is an Orlesian duke who is unimpressed by most people in most contexts. He visited the Inquisition for a few months a little over a year ago (his original app), but was called back to Orlais; in the year since, he's kept an eye on the Inquisition as much as an unaffiliated Orlesian with some connections can. (He's also been financing Gwenaëlle's house in Hightown.)

He's at a position where it is convenient to return, and he suspects that his money and influence may help the Inquisition through a slightly more direct application. He has not, unfortunately, heard that his granddaughter is not technically his granddaughter, which will probably occur slightly after he arrives at her townhouse and finds it full of imperial auditors.

Unlike actual ray of sunshine Cosima Niehaus or Enchanter "making people like me is a form of power" Julius, Romain is not here to make friends. That said, he would like the world to continue existing so he and the few people he cares about can continue living in it.

Name: Hugo Mercier d'Annecy
Race: Human
Nationality: Orlesian
Mage?: No
Age: 32
Affiliation: Orlesian crown, probably Inquisition
Occupation: Gentleman of the Imperial Mews
Goal: Somewhere between voice testing and indefinite side char
About: The third son of Baron & Baroness of Annecy and the disappointment of the bunch. Although he holds a modestly prestigious role in service to the crown (he is in charge of locating and purchasing the finest horses, hawks, and hounds in the world for Celene's household), he has used that position as an excuse to travel from horse race to hunting party and back, spending at least as much as he earns and in no way distinguishing himself or the family name.

He has never had any ambition but to stay clear of anything that might be hard or unpleasant, drifting through university without attending more than a handful of classes before relocating to court to hang about with similarly-minded young people while pretending to be trying out various vocations, none of which he ever gave any serious effort. He got into duels over women and gambling debts (always the challenged, never the challenger), but was generally known as the harmless sort of knave, a good sport, and a surprisingly competent fencer.

When the War of the Lions broke out he hung back and stayed out of it until the point where it became unfashionable to the point of treasonous not to serve before finally joining Celene's army. He did not enjoy it. After the war, he became involved with the daughter of a duke, who had no interest in allowing Hugo to become his son-in-law. He offered to get him a job instead, and Hugo accepted when he learned it would be such an easy gig.

Now, unfortunately, the invasion is not only creeping ever closer to his family home near Montfort, but the empress has recalled him to assist in managing the needs of the imperial chevaliers, meaning far more work and proximity to the front lines. Avoiding that is a dim silver lining to the latest unlucky development: an accidental ride past an opening rift resulting in an anchor shard, requiring a relocation to the Inquisition in Kirkwall. Getting to visit and irritate his youngest brother Jehan is the real upside to this turn of events.

CHARACTER

Name: Matthias
Race: Human
Nationality: Free Marcher
Mage?: Yah
Age: 16
Affiliation: Rebellllllllls
Occupation: REBEL MAGE
Goal: Voice testing AND semi maybe kind of sort of apping for a specific plot arc
About:

Matthias is a scrappy survivor and try-hard rebel. He was taught to be obedient and kind and generally moral, a simple peasant boy of the Free Marches, but also not to put up with too much shit or waste time crying over spilled milk. There was little time for coddling in Matthias' childhood. Born one of seven kids, raised by hard-working parents, Matthias knows how to get by without much. He craves attention and praise, having had very little of it in his life. A few words of kindness from the right person can send him spiraling into a paroxysm of loyalty.

He is deeply loyal, easily encouraged to a cause, and difficult to disillusion from issues or people he cares about. He has always developed crushes easily, and even after he’s fallen out of them, retains deep loyalty to his former beloveds--man, woman, or cause. He often fixates on the aloof, determined to win their praise and approval.

He has seen injustice, which has made him want to fight injustices. Compromise frustrates him. Being underestimated frustrates him more. Matthias might be young, but he has seen shit. There are few people in the world who understand where he's come from, and what growing up in a warcamp has meant.

He craves approval and acknowledgement, but resents pity. While it’s true that his life in the Tantervale Circle and war was hard, Matthias considers it to have been a trial by fire. He’s proved that he can take it, whatever it might be.

He is impulsive and acts before he thinks. His rebel streak was fanned to a flame during the height of the mage rebellion. Matthias and his fellow baby mages were reared in battle and trained on the fly. Without any deep study or tutelage, Matthias' magicwork has developed inconsistently, and he rushes through any spell or enchantment in his eagerness to deploy them. He's more guts than brains, and he reacts quickly. His lack of formal education is a source of embarrassment to him, and he will get defensive if anyone calls him on it. He’s young enough that he hasn’t been Harrowed yet, which he’ll also try to talk his way around.

Matthias makes friends with ease, and enemies with equal ease, especially if mutual hate of someone will get him a fast friend. His principals and ideals are often what block friendship. He can't get his head around putting up with someone who might be at odds with what he believes, and he refuses to try to understand anyone who would compromise their beliefs for friendship. The latter is somewhat hypocritical, because in truth, Matthias' own belief could soften for friendship. He wants badly to be liked, to have a solid group of people he can call his own. Among the rebel mages of Tantervale, Matthias had camaraderie, and he misses it badly.

Matthias wants to be a hero, and to find a cause worthy of him. Are you the one, Inquisition?

Name: Obeisance Barrow
Race: human
Nationality: Fereldan
Mage?: n
Age: late 40s
Affiliation: Templars-ish
Occupation: Mercenary
Goal: My hope is that he'll eventually be a full character, but I want to feel him out some more before I go in for the full-blown app and earning AC, etc.
About: Going by Barrow most of the time (since what kind of nerd name is Obeisance), he was born in Crestwood and grew up there until he left to join the Templars, training on the eastern side of Thedas and ending up in the Circle Tower at Jainen.
Although he did his job well and without complaint, the eruption of the Mage-Templar war gave him approximately zero reason to stick around and risk his skin for something he didn't believe in that strongly, so he defected from the Templar Order and has been working as a hired sword ever since.
The only indication that he's still a Templar is his lyrium usage, which he keeps on the down-low to avoid questions from the kind of nosy people who might get him in trouble.

On the whole, Barrow is a good-natured and affable sort who will do what he has to in order to get by in life, but not a lot more than that. His interest in Riftwatch comes from its being a pseudo-military organization that, if he plays his cards right, will presumably offer room and board in exchange for throwing some weight around.
Ambition has never been his strong suit.

CHARACTER

Name: Fitcher
Race: Human
Nationality: Antivan
Mage?: No thanks
Age: Late 50s
Affiliation: Chantry, Riftwatch
Occupation: part time Chantry spy and mage hunter, full time misandrist
Goal: Voicetesting, with the potential to bring her on board as a full character/shuffle Marcoulf "the most generic dude in the game" de Ricart to side character status. Anticipating either going out in a blaze of drama after a short lived presence and a chantry related player plot, or going out in a blaze of drama after a long tenure and a chantry related player plot. Mostly here to watch, listen, and foil your plans for become a roving band of murderous apostates - or at the very least, to espouse good old fashioned common folk beliefs about the dangers of magic.
About: Fitcher was once the fifth child of a family of weavers and dyers who had what was inititally understood to be the fabulous good fortune of being married young to an older, wealthier, and not unloveable Antivan merchant of some reputation. Come to find out, that reputation among the more socially savvy and well-connected was largely 'Has had six wives, all of which died tragically; do not under any circumstances let him marry your daughter'. What was not well known by anyone at all was the part where most of them had died for gnarly blood magic reasons. Thanks to a lot of luck and some ingenuity, Fitcher (or whatever she was called at the time) managed to kill her murderous husband, commit a bit of arson to cover the crime and fake her own death, then subsequently fled into obscurity.

Fast forward a handful of decades where, in certain circles (literally and metaphorically), Fitcher has garnered a reputation of her own. She's known as a mage hunter of some skill with a talent for discretion, who largely can be trusted to do her work quickly, cleanly(ish), and cheerfully. She specializes in taking custody of or "managing" apostates in rural communities removed from the Templar Order's immediate reach. During the Mage-Templar war, Fitcher played informant/spy/saboteur on behalf of the Chantry's interests. She also may or may not have been involved in the untimely death of a Ferelden Bann known to be heavy handed with his wife, but the description of the woman in question is vague at best and you can't prove anything. Nor can you tie that death to any others like it; sometimes gentlemen of certain persuasions simply have accidents.

Fitcher is a consummate freelancer who knows the value of being warm and inviting to both her clientele and her targets. You get more flies with honey, and so on. She has the vibe of the fun aunt from the other side of the aisle at a wedding party - she tells good jokes, she dances with your littlest cousin, she has a slow, easy smile and she kisses both you and your new husband on the cheek before leaving. "Your aunt is lovely," you say later, and your husband gives you a funny look: "I thought she was yours." In her business, Fitcher is often seeing people at their very lowest. She would prefer not to be unnecessarily dreadful about it. It brings the room down.

Of course, sometimes it is. Necessary. You may be entitled to the right to be a danger to yourself, but the moment you choose to be a danger to others is the one in which you can no longer responsibly be treated like a reasonable person. That's just common sense.

Race: Human
Nationality: Ander
Mage?: No
Age: 20s
Affiliation: Riftwatch
Occupation: Shepherd, smith, soldier
Goal: Voice-testing, maybe a permanent side guy
About: Herschel Rustin grew up in the Anderfels in a small village on the Lattenfluss between Nordbotten and Hossberg. His family keep sheep and goats and he grew up working as a shepherd, but the flock wasn't large enough to keep the whole family employed. When he was old enough he was apprenticed to a family friend who was a blacksmith in the nearest market town, but after a couple years the smith could no longer afford to keep him on and his family couldn't afford to pay his way any further. He returned home, helping with the animals and doing odd jobs where he could, but saw the writing on the wall when the army came through offering steady pay of the sort he'd never otherwise be able to earn. He spent a year at watch stations on the frontier learning to fight darkspawn and boredom, before the very confusing coup took place and suddenly sent the army into action.

He was badly wounded at Ghislain and left for dead on the field, where some Orlesians from a nearby village found him. He remained unconscious for quite a while, and when he finally woke he remained unable to speak or remember much for a while longer. By the time his faculties returned and they realized he was Ander, his carers had already grown attached, and when they assumed he'd been with the Inquisition he didn't correct them. He slowly regained his health over the next year, pitching in where he could. Once healed, he stayed, helping around the farm and eventually helping out at the forge in town. With many young men killed in the civil war or off fighting this one, the town was mostly grateful for an extra set of hands and didn't question his desire to stay.

But he felt guilty about the deception, and about what had happened at Ghislain and what he'd learned about the army he and the other Anders had been fighting for, but also about deserting his comrades and about whether he'd ever be able to go home. Before he managed to make a decision about what to do, he acquired an anchor when a rift opened nearby, and was forced to come to Kirkwall.

Name: Aleksei Ar Waslyna O Bearhold
Race: Human
Nationality: Avvar
Mage?: No
Age: 30ish
Affiliation: Yevdokiya
Occupation: Petty criminal
Goal: Voice testing, maybe a promotion to full time, maybe not, we'll see! Mostly just into playing someone who doesn't have big ambitions or give a fuck about anything outside of his very narrow set of interests.
About: Aleksei holds many Avvar traditions close to his heart. He was raised in a sprawling clan, headed by matriarchs, in the harsh environment of the Frostbacks, and even though the course of his life has taken him in a very different direction, that upbringing has left marks on him. He worships the old gods of the Alamarri, believes that their favor is worth courting. He's never lived in one place longer than a few months. His ambitions are small, but he strives to leave a mark, to attain some small glory that he can carry back to his clan. (If that glory is like, doing a really great job at stealing stuff, who can object?) The only oaths he's ever made are to his sister and his parents, to protect Yevdokiya and to honor their clan, and while he interprets them in interesting and inventive ways, he always strives to live up to that.

While his life of petty crime is partly about being able to send supplies and provisions to their clan to make life marginally easier, a bigger part of it is simply that he enjoys this weirdly unconventional life they've fallen into. He good at living on the road and robbing nobles. And he prefers the life he and Yevdokiya have made for themselves, where they rely on each other and forge their own way forward. He has a lot of good, useful traits: charming, fast learner, good with knives, quick on his feet in a crisis. Pay no attention to how his overconfidence and inability to leave well enough alone gets him continually into those crisis.

There's this tension between his upbringing and the life he knows waits for them whenever they return to the clan for good, and what's become normal for them within their little life of crime, because he knows he can't balance them forever. Eventually that'll come to some breaking point, but he's been happy to kick it down the road. He's here for a good time, and if that dovetails into opportunity to bring honor and glory to clan, so be it. And if honor is somehow tied up with his sister catching a shard and the pair of them being foisted onto Riftwatch, well, guess that's how the chips have fallen.

Race: Human
Nationality: Avvar
Mage?: No
Age: 20something
Affiliation: Herself (and Alek)
Occupation: petty criminal
Goal: voice testing, playing with shard powers
About:
Doki is culturally Avvar, and holds many of their traditions and belief sacred--but like, childhood scared. Having spent years of her life outside of her clan, she has lived the high life of a petty criminal, never staying too long in one place or taking anything too seriously. She does love her clan, and her parents, and her brother. She worships the old gods, casually, and she’s fully with Aleksei when it comes to sending back supplies and provisions to their clan, and extravagant gifts to their parents--but the longer she spends away from her clan, the more she comes to love the life she’s made for herself.

Doki likes chaos. She likes to be the last woman standing after a fight or a wild drinking game. She likes devising a scheme that will waylay some posh boy’s gold or pretty girl’s jeweled necklace. She is in it for herself (and Aleksei, natch), and she’s a little greedy, in that she likes having the most coins or gems to herself. She can’t turn down a bet or a chance to make some gold, especially if she’s given free reign on how it’s made.

And she likes the life that she’s made with Alek: just the two of them, watching out for each other. He is the only person she’s ever really needed and there is pride in that, too. They have been able to make it alone, together, and who’s to say that can’t go on forever? She does like making his life a little difficult, and worming them into scrapes that he has to help get them out of. It’s all worth it for that aha moment, where their way comes clear.

She possesses a loyal streak, but it runs deep and narrow. Mostly she is loyal to Alek and Alek only. For him, she would do almost anything. Maybe anything. Depending on what that “anything” is.

Doki is clever and cunning and quick-witted. She has (on a good day) (among the right company) a kind of rough charm, and can either bull or bullshit her way both into and out of things. She lacks finesse, and much prefers direct confrontation to circling delicately around a problem. Sharp, opinionated, and unafraid to speak her mind, Doki still likes to have a good time. When she stops having a good time, she’ll tell you.

Getting the shard stuck in her hand has added a new and desperate levity to their circumstances, one Doki is not excited about. She has never had to be responsible in her life. This will be a new challenge. But she did get to bring her big brother with her, so it’ll probably be all right.

Occupation: Actor
Goal: Kind of voice testing, but also adding to our elf ranks from a different angle, providing some gossipy and bantery action on the network, acting as a source of intelligence around certain key players in the Game, etc etc.
About:

  • born into the Val Royeaux alienage, christened 'Florent'. his parents had humble jobs and only ever expected Florent to keep out of trouble.
  • when he was young, started hanging around a little playhouse in the alienage, basically a medieval community centre that put on little shows a few times a year. occasionally lent out its best players to playhouses beyond the alienage, and sometimes they never looked back. Florent took this all very seriously and rose to local prominence. eventually he landed a role in a more significant house as 'Cowering Elf'. he cried.
  • soared to dizzying heights (for a once-penniless actor) throughout his 20s. gave himself a last name, a play on his father's name. became a permanent and popular feature of a company that put on shows for all classes of people, often musicals and pantomimes, but would indulge in the odd drama. as a professional actor in Orlais, Florent enjoyed a life separate from his elven kin. liked to stay oblivious to their plights when possible, but sent gold back to his folks.
  • sometimes tries to write his own shows, is not very good at it.
  • features as an accessory to the Game rather than a full player, has occasionally been maneuvered around without fully grasping what was happening. has ambitions to make a wealthy old lady fall in love with him and allow him to retire into the luxuries of which he is now accustomed.

    Mage?: No
    Age: 44
Affiliation: Currently Riftwatch, has worked with/alongside Grey Wardens in the past
    Occupation: Before this, mail carrier
Goal: Voice testing, faffing about with the idea of playing A Real Grownup.
    About:
    • Clan Ethghilas travels along the Lattenfluss and Aenor grows up happy enough. At sixteen, while they're camped somewhere near north of Kassel, she meets a handsome farmboy named Raffen and has a swoony little secret fling.

    • When she realizes she's pregnant, she lets everyone think she slept with another Dalish elf, which works right up until baby Raban comes out with round ears. Whoops. A few days after his birth, members of the clan leave him on a random doorstep in Kassel proper and Aenor's parents forbid her from speaking of her son. The clan regards this incident as something over and done with, to be forgotten.

    • Aenor, for the rest of her seventeenth year and part of her eighteenth, tries to move on the way her clan expects and takes on the vallaslin of Falon'din. Eventually, she realizes that she can't and leaves in the night, changing her name (sometimes spelled Dinadhal, sometimes Din'adhal, she's barely literate and doesn't particularly care) and heading south to Hossberg.

    • Turns out living in an alienage is confining, ugly, and segregated, and humans don't love it when you try to live in the nice parts of the city. Not a good time for her.

    • Eventually finds work carrying packages, messages, and favours, first between Hossberg and Nordbotten, and then across the deserts between Nordbotten and Laysh (or between Nordbotten and Weisshaupt if the deserts would be too hard to cross). She lives on the border of civilization and never stays anywhere long enough to be rejected. The person who brings the mail is providing a popular service without wearing out her welcome. She has friends among the people she works with, but the relationships are fairly shallow--dinner companions, the occasional one-night stand. She also does mail-carrying work with/for the Grey Wardens, though she doesn't have any desire to join.

    • Many years later, her son finds her! Answers to Caric, not Raban, but otherwise, he's clearly the perfect child.
