War Table (Defunct)

WAR TABLE (DEFUNCT)

This is a defunct version of this page. For the new version, please go back to the game navigation and choose the War Table link.

Thedas is a big world with a lot to do, and the war against Corypheus has about a hundred fronts, so between major mod events, plot progression takes the form of player plots and plots that originate from divisions and projects. These smaller plots can be anything from negotiating agreements with foreign dignitaries to infiltrating enemy operations to escorting shipments of pedigree nugs through a haunted forest as a favor to an ally. Some of them will directly influence the overarching mod plot; others may just be fun.

Players whose characters lead the divisions and projects IC facilitate plot efforts by setting the agenda for each group's work—they identify the main objectives the team will be focused on and sometimes develop specific plot assignments to accomplish the group's goals.

CLICK HERE FOR THE CURRENT PLOT CYCLE.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
  1. Read! The divisions and each project have separate comments below explaining what they'll be working on over the coming months. Read up on the ones your characters belong to and think about how they'd contribute. (If your character hasn't joined any division or project, you can join a division by updating your character's info on the taken list or join a project by filling out the form on the corresponding project page.)

  2. Contribute! Use the provided forms to document the ways your character will be contributing to the objectives—or if there's something else they intend to pursue within the project's scope that isn't covered by those objectives. These can be simple things that will occur in the background of your other RP, like "John is going to research dwarven etiquette to assist the team going to Orzammar," or they can be bigger things that warrant a player plot, like "John is going to assassinate King Bhelen." IC leaders will reply to let you know if their characters wouldn't approve of what yours are doing or to help you if you need help. (You can also reply to other players' comments if you have something to add or suggest, but we recommend making separate OOC posts or using the CR meme for pure brainstorming sessions.)

  3. RP! If your characters are doing background work, like research or the types of mini-plots we specify don't need plot requests, you can get straight to it (or submit an info request if needed). If your characters are doing something that does warrant a plot request, submit one, and then play it out after we've gotten back to you.

  4. File a report with the appropriate project or division after a significant plot has been completed. You don't need to do these for research or the kinds of minor plots that don't require plot requests. But reports allow everyone to keep up what's going on in the game—because there is usually a lot—and respond to, reward, or build on your character's efforts in the future. If you negotiate a treaty but don't file a report about it, we'll generally assume that it hasn't happened. And remember that folks who run player plots get bonus AC reward points once a report is filed!

If you have your own ideas for plots pertinent to divisions or projects outside those covered by objectives, or for personal plots that don't fit into any of these boxes at all, you're always welcome to separately submit player plot requests! You can also donate ideas directly to IC leaders or other players if you have plot ideas but would rather not run them yourself. And if you want to get involved in running a project, check the leadership roles list for vacancies in division or project leadership slots.

THE BLACK DIVINE
WHAT: The Black Divine's status and stance on Corypheus' takeover of Minrathous are currently unknown, and determining whether he's a potential ally or a definite enemy is a priority. Getting into Minrathous would be too difficult, and none of the Inquisition's potential allies there are in a position to spy on the Divine or get that sort of information out of the city. But quietly speaking to Imperial Chantry officials in more accessible cities might shed some light on the situation. The success or failure of this mission will be rolled for, with 25%, 50%, and 75% chances of things going wrong in each successive city.
WHERE: Marothius, Perivantium, and Carastes.
WHEN: Harvestmere.
WHO: Assigned to one person, who can bring up to three other people with them. Requires a mix of sneaking and diplomacy skills, plus the ability to travel in Tevinter without drawing too much attention. Project members have priority for sign-ups, but otherwise open to everyone.

THE SLAVE SITUATION
WHAT: While slaves are a likely demographic to have problems with Tevinter being overrun by those seeking to restore Tevinter to its former glory—a glory built largely out of bloodshed—they're not a monolith, and the involvement of some apparent slaves in the Venatori coup in Minrathous warrants investigation. A few Inquisition members will be assigned to travel to Vol Dorma under cover and linger long enough to gain and understanding of scope of slaves' unrest or cooperation with the Venatori, while keeping an eye out for potential allies or inroads. As this is purely an information-gathering endeavor, it won't fail, as long as nobody does anything stupid.
WHERE: Vol Dorma.
WHEN: Harvestmere.
WHO: Assigned to up to three people, who can bring up to three other people with them. Requires primarily stealth/acting skills and the ability to hang out in hostile Tevinter territory without being noticed. (Anchors are fine if they can be kept covered.) It may require faking slave and slaveowner relationships, so it also requires an OOC ability to do that with sensitivity and respect for the subject matter. I.e., if you use this for anything sexy, I'll destroy you. Project members have priority for sign-ups, but otherwise open to everyone.

ANDER DESERTERS
WHAT: A half-dozen Ander soldiers previously made contact with the Inquisition, attempting to desert and offering information on the Ander military and general situation in exchange for amnesty. The Inquisition was willing to entertain the offer, but the group never showed up to meet with the contact who was going to guide them through the Hunterhorn Mountains to safety, and that contact soon went silent as well. A team will be sent to try to track down either the contacts or the deserters, or ideally both, and to extract them from the Anderfels if possible. The success or failure of this mission will be rolled for, with a 60% chance of failure if no one on the team speaks Ander and a 40% chance of failure if someone does.
WHERE: The Hunterhorn Mountains.
WHEN: Harvestmere.
WHO: Assigned to one person, who can bring up to three other people with them. Requires tracking skills; could culminate in a diplomacy, combat, or stealth-based resolution depending on what the person in charge wants to do. Project members have priority for sign-ups, but otherwise open to everyone.

CUT OFF SUPPLY ROUTES, PART 1
WHAT: Tevinter's trade with Antiva and the rest of Thedas is split between trade by sea—which requires navigating around hostile Qunari vessels—and trade by land. One of the quickest land routes to Antiva is through a passage in the Hundred Pillars, the only one wide enough to allow larger merchant caravans to safely pass. Blocking that passage won't prevent goods from being passed between the two countries, but it will make it a slower and more dangerous undertaking. And doing it without making it clear that the Inquisition is responsible is key, since Antiva might yet be an ally but might also object to having its trade interfered with before it agrees to anything. The success or failure of this mission will be rolled for, with a 20% chance of failure.
WHERE: The Hundred Pillars, west of Marothius.
WHEN: Harvestmere.
WHO: Assigned to one person, who can bring a larger team if they want. Their mission is to make the passage unpassable by whatever means are at their disposal, with no particular requirements, but possible methods include using magic or physics to collapse parts of the road, filling it with so many traps it becomes a deathtrap, hiring and suppling mercenaries or bandits to keep an eye on the road and hassle any with more goods than refugees would be carrying, etc. Project members have priority for sign-ups, but otherwise open to everyone.

CUT OFF SUPPLY ROUTES, PART 2
WHAT: Tevinter's trade with Antiva and the rest of Thedas is split between trade by sea—which requires navigating around hostile Qunari vessels—and trade by land. One of the other quickest land routes to Antiva is to skirt through the foothills of the Hundred Pillars, near the Arlathan Forest—which, like most forests, is occupied in part by Dalish elves, who might be persuaded to focus their attention on that region and help make passing through it a dangerous prospect. Unfortunately for the Inquisition, the Dalish in Antiva are known to be significantly more hostile toward outsiders than anywhere else in Thedas, so talking to them in the first place is a tall order, let alone getting them to agree to anything. The success or failure of this mission will be rolled for, with a 60% chance of failure if no elves go along, a 50% chance of failure if elves do go but none of them are Dalish, and a 40% chance of failure if at least one Dalish elf is there.
WHERE: The Arlathan Forest.
WHEN: Harvestmere.
WHO: Assigned to up to one person, who can bring a larger team if they want. Some tracking and stealth may be required to find the Dalish clan, and diplomacy skills won't hurt after that. Project members have priority for sign-ups, but otherwise open to everyone.

A BETTER MAGEBANE
WHAT: According to the (former) Archon, a Seheron apothecary is rumored to have been developing a recipe for magebane significantly more potent than what is available in the south, at the Archon's own request, for Seheron natives to use against the Tevinter mages and Qunari Saarebas. Assuming that's true, the Inquisition would much rather have the recipe than potentially allow Corypheus (or the Qun, for that matter) to obtain it for use against Inquisition mages. A team will be dispatched to Seheron to find the apothecary, determine the state of her research, and extract her from the country if necessary and possible. This success or failure of this mission will be rolled for, with a 50% chance of failure.
WHERE: Seheron.
WHEN: Harvestmere.
WHO: Assigned to one person, who can bring up to three other people with them. Requires a degree of subtly in order to navigate Seheron, which is a dangerous place, and find a person of interest without drawing attention, and the ability to not die if caught in the crossfire of the Tevinter/Qunari conflict wouldn't hurt either. Project members have priority for sign-ups, but otherwise open to everyone.

Sign up by September 30 by replying to this comment with the form below. I'll pick ASAP and give you the details you need to run the assignment. Anything that isn't claimed as of September 30 will be available afterwards on a rolling basis.

For assignments with a chance of failure, I'll roll on Discord. For things with a chance of failure that changes depending on the team composition, I'll roll and give you the outcome after you tell me who else is on your character's team. And when something has a chance of failure, it means that the main objective will not be successful, but there will still be room for you to handle to that in different ways!

CHARACTER: Hanzo Shimada
ASSIGNMENT: The Slave Situation
DIVISION & PROJECTS: Scouting, Corypheus' History and Hostile Powers
SUITABILITY & APPROACH: Hanzo is 100% stealth based. He is an assassin by trade and has learned how to move in and out of places without being discovered. With the acquisition of his new specialisation he will be able to be a touch sneakier and be able to move around without too much risk of being seen. Also, being Tevinter born, he has an intimate understanding of the nature of the slave trade there and would be able to both look and act as a Master. Since he was one, once. He also speaks both Trade and Tevene, which would come in helpful.
OTHER NOTES: He's doing his best.

WHAT: The Slave Situation

WHO: Hanzo, Kitty, Max, Connor

WHEN: You can set it IC whenever you want! OOC, try to have a report done by the end of November.

HOW: As stated, the team will travel to Val Dorma, under cover. Precisely what that cover is will be up to you—in addition to the obvious "wealthy Tevinter and accompanying slaves" cover, individuals in other countries practice slavery more quietly even though it's been outlawed and could be visiting to purchase slaves or do other business, or could not have slaves at all but servants who would wind up mingling with slaves in a Tevinter household, etc. They have a specific inroad with an Inquisition-friendly, wealthy Soporati merchant in Val Dorma who will not be very helpful on the spy front, having no talent for subterfuge and no knowledge of her own, but will allow them to stay in her fancy second house, providing a relatively secure place where they can discuss plans and let their covers slip without being constantly on guard.

The following information can be acquired in the following stages:

  • Engaging slaves in casual conversation will be enough to show that there's absolutely no unity of opinion: some say the name of Calpernia (known to be one of Corypheus' lieutenants) with a sort of respect bordering on reverence and believe she intends to free them all, others don't care whether there's real potential for freedom or not because they think freeing them all would be chaos and get them all killed, others are convinced she'll do no such thing and it's all a ploy to keep them working until it's too late, and others will have every shade of opinion in between those three major categories.

With regard to the Inquisition, opinions will be similarly varied, but overall trending toward either the negative or neutral-for-lack-of-knowledge: information about the Inquisition inside Tevinter, especially among a population of people who can't read, has been scattered at best, and the organization's tendency to be wherever the trouble is has translated into a reputation for being the cause of it. The most common fear that might be casually alluded to in conversation is one that the Inquisition's involvement would stir Tevinter into war and get everyone killed.
    .
  • Eavesdropping on (or insinuating oneself via friendship over a few days) into easily noticed but private meetings and discussions will allow identifying a few people who seem to be ringleaders and intentionally trying to sway people toward two major courses of action: an elven woman named Vasilia is advocating supporting Calpernia and using their access to everyone's homes and businesses to inform on masters and anyone else who isn't supporting the new regime, while the human Tessaria and elven Solvarin are attempting to hatch a plot for a group of slaves to trade information to the Inquisition in exchange for being extracted from the country.

  • Dedicated tailing/spying or direct contact with Vasilia will show nothing else suspicious about her—she sincerely believes Calpernia will elevate the slave population, and is also a patriot despite her status and a contentious relationship with her master, uninterested in being rescued by the outside world rather than made an equal in her own country.

  • Dedicated tailing/spying or direct contact with Tessaria and Solvarin will reveal a bit of a split: Solvarin is older, more measured, and the one interested in trading information for an escape for himself and his loved ones, while Tessaria is deferring to his pessimism but is also younger, more ready to start fires, and in possession of a small stockpile of shitty weapons she's rescued from being discarded and partially repaired using skills picked up from her master, a blacksmith—who is also, according to her, a very nice man who's done her every kindness short of freeing her and is among a number of free Soporati citizens who are not here for what either Corypheus or Calpernia are selling and might be relied on to help oppose them and to shake up Tevinter's class system, though their interest might not uniformly extend to freeing slaves.

As the goal is just to gather information, the team won't have the authority to make any promises or offer any deals, at this juncture, on the Inquisition's behalf.

OOC NOTES: The team can bring up to four other people with them—so one person apiece—as long as those people are reasonable selections for the mission and won't make anyone look stupid for allowing them to go. As long as the cover story is reasonable and everyone keeps their heads down outside of that house, they'll be able to pull it off—but if you do want things to go wrong, that's also fine! Just check in with us about it before you decide to end in an escape scene or something. And if you want to pursue anything on the side, make sure you drop an info request or a plot request so the mods (hi) can give additional information. And, lastly, as a reminder, if you do anything at all to make the master/slave relationship seem sexy, we'll murder you!

    CHARACTER: Anders
ASSIGNMENT: Ander Deserters, A Better Magebane (equal priority)
DIVISION & PROJECTS: Research, Corpsy Histy, Hostile Powers
    SUITABILITY & APPROACH:
-Ander Deserters - he speaks Anders, and initially he'd want to take a diplomatic approach. He'd definitely try to pick someone good at diplomacy to help buff the abilities there.

-A better magebane - Anders is good at finding his way through unfamiliar territory and holding his own in a fight, as well as supporting others in said fight.

OTHER NOTES: Regarding the magebane mission, he'd have a vested interest in this recipe not being used against the Inquisition... but with that said he'd also have a vested interest in the recipe not being completed and given to anyone. Which means he's entirely up for failure if failure means she winds up dead and her research destroyed.

    WHAT: Ander Deserters

    WHO: Anders

WHEN: You can set it IC whenever you want! OOC, try to have a report done by November 10.

HOW: We unfortunately rolled a 34 out of the required 40/100 for this assignment, so the team will fail overall at its objective, but it will be a close one!

However they choose to do the tracking, Anders and his team will be able to track the missing Inquisition contact from the point where he'd intended to meet the deserters to a point not far from there where he did in fact come into contact with a larger group of people, then through the mountains. The trail can be as obvious as necessary for them to pull it off with whatever tracking abilities they do have; the contact can have left a trail of clues if their nature skills aren't enough on their own.

The trail will end abruptly in the wilderness, with additional signs that someone had taken care to begin covering it, but it will bring the team close enough to the final destination that they'll still be able to find it: a small Warden tower fortress tucked into the mountains, used as a watchtower during various Blights. It will be occupied by a dozen Ander soldiers, who can be observed for a while but will not be doing anything more interesting than keeping watch, cleaning their armor and weapons, and preparing meals.

If the team chooses to approach them, they can be engaged in conversation and won't immediately be hostile; if spoken to in Trade initially, or if the team openly identifies themselves as the Inquisition searching for a contact, they'll identify themselves as the missing deserters, say that they were delayed and the contact was injured by an animal, and invite the team inside to eat with them, but someone's joke in Ander about the contact they're searching for finding the wine to die for might clue someone in to the fact that it is not a very friendly offer. If initially spoken to in Ander, with no signs that the team is with the Inquisition, the soldiers will not claim to be deserters and will hassle them a little bit about who they are and where they're going but be willing to let them leave unharmed if they lie convincingly and don't pick fights.

The bottom line, no matter which approach is taken, is that the contact meant to meet the "deserters" is now very dead, and the deserters in no mood to desert. Some kind of revenge can possibly be taken, depending on the size of the team that's brought and its ability to take on a dozen trained, fierce Ander soldiers in whatever method it chooses, although they'll need to weigh the risk of leaving evidence that they were there.

OOC NOTES: Since Anders is the only person on this mission, he can choose up to three people to bring with him! This mission isn't time-sensitive, so you're also welcome to take until the end of November to complete it if you want. Just let us know if you need longer than that.

    CHARACTER: Connor 60
    ASSIGNMENT: The Slave Situation
DIVISION & PROJECTS: N/A atm but I've asked that he be signed up w/ Scouting.
SUITABILITY & APPROACH: Connor was essentially a slave, and has never broken his conditioning. He still believes that humans are/were his natural masters and that he was created to be efficient and obedient, to hunt his own when they rose up against their creators. IC this means he would have an easy time of passing as a slave, and of gaining the confidence of slaves who are cooperating with the venatori. He also finds comfort in having a task and not questioning it, so he'd go along with the mission to the letter even though I'm hoping it shakes him up a bit inwardly. His long-term goal is breaking this conditioning but I don't want him to do this without setbacks. This would provide opportunities for him to work at it.

He was a detective and seemed to be skilled in diplomacy and stealth. His inclination would be to whatever approach is safest since he's very concerned about being injured or killed now that he is no longer an android that can be repaired/have his memories backed up.

OTHER NOTES: Since Connor (and me!) are new, I'm putting him forward as a tag-along rather than someone leading the mission.

    WHAT: The Black Divine

    WHO: Yseult

WHEN: You can set it IC whenever you want! OOC, try to have a report done by the end of November.

HOW: Yseult and a team of her choosing will visit three relatively accessible Tevinter cities, not yet overtaken by the Venatori or decided in their allegiance, with a particular focus on attempting to acquire information about the Black Divine, Urian Nahalias, by visiting—openly or not—three Grand Clerics known to have ties to him.

In Marothius (for which we rolled a 28 out of the required 25/100 for success), the Grand Cleric will be outwardly friendly and willing to talk. He's a very old man, amiable and frank because he's going to die soon anyway and he'd rather (he'll be happy to explain) be assassinated than die attempting to shit. He'll also be happy to explain that, while he knew Nahalias well when he was a boy—complete with adorable anecdotes about his precocious tendency to cause trouble and then evade any punishment—he has not had direct contact in years and does not know what mind he may be in now. His personal opinion will be that Nahalias must be aware that no one, even Corypheus, can restore what Tevinter has lost, and in that case surely he won't genuinely support him. While he might have had more anecdotes and information to provide, the visit will be cut short by the arrival in the Chantry of a suspiciously watchful pack of well-dressed men.

In Perivantium (for which we rolled a 68 out of the required 50), the Grand Cleric will be absent, and his underlings will be vague and wary of talking to anyone, but also not interested in murdering them or turning them in. They will overall seem to believe they're being watched, essentially, wherever their personal sympathies lie. One of them will provide some subtle and plausibly deniable assistance by indicating where to look for more information—maybe by talking about making sure a particular door is locked when he knows he's being listened to, maybe by yawning and pointing while he stretches his arms, however you want to handle that—but acquiring it will require a late-night break-in in the opulent and never entirely empty Imperial Chantry.

Once that has been pulled off—successfully, but not too easily—the team will be able to acquire correspondence sent to the Grand Cleric from the Black Divine. All of it will be encoded, but also immediately decipherable, due to some work already done by the project. The correspondence will show that the Black Divine has been soliciting his subordinates for details, numbers, and their personal opinions on the military strengths of their respective cities, asking for news on how their local leaders are responding to the coup, and otherwise soliciting buckets of information. The last piece of correspondence will be an order to report to Minrathous.

In Carastes (for which we rolled a 15 out of the required 75, whoops), the team will barely have barely arrived before the Grand Cleric and other clergy at the Chantry will turn on them and make a very good attempt at barring their escape from the building pending the arrival of the same watchful men from Marothius. A keen eye might notice a red crystal affixed to one wall in an office, though it will look like a decoration rather than anything very important. (Several of those involved will be mages, but not all.) You can play the evasion and escape scene of your dreams on the way out! But the only real information that will be acquired is that Carastes' Grand Cleric is on Corypheus' side—which, coupled with the Grand Cleric's purportedly close relationship with the Black Divine, may be particularly worrisome in that respect.

OOC NOTES: Yseult can bring up to three other people of her choice along with her. If anyone wants to go off-script or investigate something other than the Chantries, they'll need to put in separate info or plot requests!

    CHARACTER: Max
    ASSIGNMENT: The Slave Situation
DIVISION & PROJECTS: Diplomacy, Hostile Powers & Base Operations soon
SUITABILITY & APPROACH: Max has acting skills, speaks decent Tevene, and has experience with slavery in Tevinter. She's not at all open about her personal history or excited about putting herself at risk, BUT if teams are being put together she'd want to make sure the information is successfully acquired and nobody screws up and gets themselves in trouble. She'd cite her familiarity with the slave trade in Nascere as evidence of her suitability.
OTHER NOTES: She has a good understanding of why slaves might be wary of the whole rebellion idea, so she might be good for talking to the kinds of folks who are less eager to speak openly about that kind of thing? But she's prooobably best paired with people who actually believe resisting the Venatori won't just get a bunch of slaves killed. Also: I'd be game for her tagging along vs. leading a mission if that makes more sense.

SO, WE TRIED BUT. We got sidetracked by Ghislain and are running behind on kicking off this plot. We're still keen to do it, though. Is it okay if we RP about this and get a report in by the end of December instead?

    ASSIGNMENT: Supply Chain 1, Magebane
DIVISION & PROJECTS: Forces Division, Hostile Powers / Chantry Relations
SUITABILITY & APPROACH: Good at moving things with magic, inclined to smashy flashy approaches, but can be convinced to operate more sneakily if necessary.
OTHER NOTES: Would be of two minds about what to do with the magebane recipe.

WHAT: Cut Off Supply Routes, Part 1

    WHO: Nell

HOW: We rolled a 3 out of the required 20/100, ouch, so this is not going to very well.

It will, however, be fairly uncomplicated and low key. Nell and the team she chooses can go about attempting to block the passage in any way they want—collapsing parts of it, trapping it to all hell, hiring mercenaries, or something else not yet imagined—with the caveat that as they are in the process of doing this, they will be discovered by an Antivan merchant caravan. The large kind, with guards.

One way or another, that caravan will know that they're with the Inquisition; they can have sent ahead a scout who listened in on them, already discovered and hassled the mercenaries for details, or hold them and threaten to take them back to Antiva (or, in fact, take them back to Antiva, and hold them until someone else from the Inquisition comes to bail them out while looking exasperated).

Needless to say, Antiva will be irritated. How irritated they are will depend on how much damage was done before the interruption, which is up to you; you can have already completely blocked off the passage if you want, at the expense of greater Antivan ire, or you can have them caught mid-magic like guilty kids, have them unset a lot of traps or tell the mercenaries that the deal is off, etc.

OOC NOTES: Since Nell is the only person assigned, she's in charge and can bring whoever she wants to assist. Since this could potentially affect Antiva's willingness to assist with the war, try to have a report filed by November 10.

    CHARACTER: Marisol
ASSIGNMENT: Magebane, Supply Routes 1, Supply Routes 2
DIVISION & PROJECTS: Scouting, Hostile Powers, Naval Presence
SUITABILITY & APPROACH: strong emotions about magic (may not be an asset but you know), her smuggling skills, appearance of diplomacy with a strong lean for assassination and spy type nonsense, secret shapeshifter skills could be useful for getting in and out and gathering information before zooming in
    OTHER NOTES: swooshy dress
